As I try more and more to notice the little things that make everyday life special – I realized how much I enjoy getting mail 🙂 Small cards, magazines, packages, even sometimes the advertisements! There’s just something about going out to the mailbox and finding something addressed especially to you.
Remember the days of pen pals? I remember we even sent (in the real mail – not e-mail) school pictures back and forth to one another so we could see what the other looked like. Now, with a few clicks, we can see someone’s life from middle school to middle age. Writing and receiving notes and cards happens to be one of my favorite things, but I think it is slowly becoming obsolete in this technology focused age. It makes me wonder if one day, all mail could possibly be electronic. That would be a sad day indeed. Until that day comes, though, I’m going to embrace the happiness that comes with a handwritten note composed especially for me!
When we recently travelled back to Texas to visit, one of my sweet friends suggested we be pen pals as we both like to read, write, and both have a large collection of cards to send. I loved the idea and once we returned to NC, quickly wrote her a card. It was refreshing, yet strange in the sense that handwriting questions and updates seems like so long ago…yet I enjoyed it so much and look forward to continuing to correspond this everyday, yet currently unique way.A handwritten note or card in the days where technology rules (technology is great and has its place- but a text nor Facebook post can’t show up in your mailbox!) can be a wonderful encouragement. Such a great way to make someone’s everyday extraordinary – don’t you think? It definitely has the power to make me smile, and I hope the days of handwritten notes stay around for many years to come.
Did you have a pen pal growing up? Are you still in touch? What is your favorite piece of mail every month? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
